Aftercare
Tattoo Aftercare Plan
1. Saniderm Care:
Keep Saniderm on for 3-5 days: Saniderm is designed to protect your tattoo and promote healing. You should keep it on for the full recommended duration, which can vary based on the size of your tattoo. If you were told to keep it on for a shorter or longer period, follow that guidance.
Do not remove it early: Removing the Saniderm too soon can harm the healing process and affect the quality of your tattoo. It helps reduce exposure to bacteria and contaminants.
Saniderm Leaks: If you notice any leaking or excess fluid under the Saniderm, it’s okay to remove it early. In this case, move on to the traditional aftercare steps below.
2. Traditional Aftercare (Post-Saniderm Removal or if No Saniderm Used):
Washing:
After you remove the Saniderm or if you never used it, gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Do not use harsh or abrasive scrubs. Wash only your tattoo (avoid the surrounding skin) to prevent irritation.
Use your hand to gently clean the tattoo, avoiding washcloths or sponges that may harbor bacteria.
Pat your tattoo dry with a clean, soft towel—do not rub.
Lotion Application:
Once your tattoo is dry, apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, non-irritating lotion or ointment. It’s important to use a product designed for sensitive skin.
Avoid applying too much lotion, as this can clog pores and lead to irritation.
If you experience any irritation, stop using the lotion and consult your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional.
Ongoing Care:
Continue washing and moisturizing your tattoo 2-3 times daily for the next 2-4 weeks, or as advised by your tattoo artist.
Avoid scratching, picking, or peeling the tattoo as it heals. Let any scabbing or peeling happen naturally.
Do not submerge the tattoo in water for extended periods (like swimming or hot tubs) until fully healed.
Sun Protection: Once your tattoo has healed, apply sunscreen to protect it from sun damage, which can fade the colors.
3. Things to Avoid During the Healing Process:
Tight or rough clothing that might rub against your tattoo and cause irritation.
Excessive sweating: Avoid heavy workouts or activities that can make your tattoo sweat excessively in the first few days.
Direct sun exposure: Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight during the healing process.
Soaking in water: Avoid baths, pools, oceans, or hot tubs until the tattoo is fully healed.
4. Signs of Infection or Complications:
Excessive redness, swelling, or pain after the first few days, or if the tattoo area feels hot to the touch.
Pus or unusual discharge (after removing the second skin)
Fever or chills (seek immediate medical attention if this occurs).
If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional for advice.
By following this aftercare plan, you’ll give your tattoo the best chance of healing beautifully. Always consult with your tattoo artist for any specific care instructions or concerns, as they may have additional tips based on your unique tattoo.
